Sometimes, I wonder how the Japanese are able to show what are considered "children's anime" which can deal with very serious topics. How do they allow shows that put their viewers through such an emotional roller coaster that are said to be aimed at elementary school students? And why don't I see or hear about this in many modern American animations, unlike the American classics (recall something like Bambi, for example)? I don't hear of anything that runs like Full Moon wo Sagashite in America today, but I have found another example of an emotionally tiring series in Denno Coil
I have basically marathoned the last half of Denno Coil over the weekend after not watching it for several months. I really stopped reading other people's blogs during that time, as I didn't want to spoil myself for this series as of yet1. I found the ending to be very well handled, though I seem to comparing it to the likes of how Gainax ends things2. In any case, it really doesn't matter; I took my time with this series and basically watched it when it could take maximum effect on me. I didn't want to watch it tired or distracted. And I enjoyed the heck out of it. Right now, I'm considering this and Mushishi two of the best anime series in the past several years, but I really should give it time to sink on me to give a final answer on that. In the meantime, this series has gotten onto my "Get it when it comes out on DVD" list.
Yes, I'm back. For now. Hopefully, I can keep up on blogging again.

Welcome back!
Re: Quick Impressions: Denno Coil
Good to hear from you.
I'd say that Denno Coil and Mushishi are not just "two of the best" but are the two best series since Haibane Renmei.
Re: Quick Impressions: Denno Coil
Well, even a day after finishing Denno Coil, I agree with you. But I do want to watch through it again before really finalizing it. Hell, I'm also on my fourth run through Mushishi, and this time I'm watching the English dub on the official DVDs with the girlfriend. What I really need to do is to acquire the XviD AVI files of Denno Coil and see if they work on the DVD player (It can handle Divx files) so that the girlfriend can also watch with me on the second run on the main TV. This time, I got the 720p MKVs; the series looks very good in high-definition, that's for sure.

Welcome back and I'm so glad you enjoyed Dennou Coil! I guessed you would. :D

Welcome back to the blogosphere! And boy, you sure as hell picked a good title to return with. For me, DC was possibly the best series of 2007 and as such climbs to the upper reaches of my 'to buy' list as and when the Western DVD release materialises. Strangely, my views on Mushishi echo Don's - alongside Haibane Renmei, it too is one of my all-time favourites.
There isn't much I can say about Coil that I haven't already, but it would definitely be selling the series short in saying it was 'just for kids'.
