Eve no Jikan on Crunchyroll
I was just thinking of Eve no Jikan (Time of Eve) when I saw this announcement on Anime News Network:
Crunchyroll to Premiere Time of Eve in English/French
posted on 2008-09-23 15:48 EDT
1st 2 acts of Yasuhiro Yoshiura's sci-fi anime to debut online on October 2
The Crunchyroll video-sharing website and the media production company Directions, Inc. have announced that Crunchyroll will premiere Yasuhiro Yoshiura's Time of Eve (Eve no Jikan) anime series in English and French in North America and Europe on October 2. Yoshiura and Studio Rikka — the creators of the Mizu no Kotoba and Pale Cocoon anime — developed this "non-hard science-fiction" story about everyday life in a future Japan populated by robots and life-like androids.
The first two acts of the series will be available on October 2 at 1:00 a.m. PT through advertising-supported streaming and through a download-to-own (DTO) option without digital rights management (DRM). Crunchyroll also plans to host a live question-and-answer session with Yoshiura this November.
The first act of Time of Eve had already been streamed for free in Japanese in August, but not the second act. (In the linked page, select "Movie" from the top menu and then select "Act 01: Akiko.")

I'd still rather download and watch the series on my TV setup, but this is a good way to give exposure (and a handy1 link to interested viewers) to Yasuhiro Yoshiura's latest work.
UPDATE 09-24-2008: Author highlighted one part of this deal that I had glossed over earlier, from the claim in the article about Crunchyroll offering “a download-to-own (DTO) option without digital rights management (DRM).” If this is truly the case, and I can just stream the downloaded file through TVersity to my living room setup, I'll probably just purchase the episodes off of Crunchyroll as they come out. I'll try it out with the first episode, since it's only 2 dollars per episode (Not sure what the badge bonus is about, but I don't need ipod or PSP versions either).
UPDATE 09-24-2008 Part 2: Boo! The stream requires an account to view it. It's harder to float the link out to people (most of who won't have a Crunchyroll account) to get people to check it out this way, even if registering on the site is free.
UPDATE 09-30-2008: Yay! I just checked, and it looks like you can watch this streamed now without having to be logged in.

I like this anime too. I can see shinkai's style in it.
i am kzoue. When I searching Makoto Shinkai on google, I found here.
Coincidence is cool, I think.
Re: Eve no Jikan on Crunchyroll
Hi kzoue. If you're the same one that's on the Makoto Shinkai English Fan Forum and Site (we really should consider shortening that name...) , thank you for translating that Shinkai blog post for us!
I respectively disagree about seeing Shinkai's style in Eve no Jikan, though..
I only see Yoshiura's style in it. I did make the comparisons between the two directors in how they got started and certain visual aesthetics, but if I had seen Eve no Jikan without any knowledge of Yoshiura, I'd be very hard pressed to say "This looks like Shinkai made it."
It's similar to the comparisons of Shinkai to Hayao Miyazaki, for me.
There are things that definitely goes across all three directors, though: They are all dedicated to their work, and know how to reach across to their audience through their work.
Re: Eve no Jikan on Crunchyroll
I'd be happiest seeing this on DVD but if the likes of Crunchyroll put it out to a wider audience, that can only be a good thing. Quite honestly this is one of the best shows of the year.
Given that it's supposed to be a six-parter I'd guess that they'll spread the episodes across a year with one more every two months, assuming the second is indeed out on October 2 (Cannot wait!). It's a shame we have to wait so long each time but given the quality of the first ep I don't mind them taking their time over getting everything just right!
Re: Eve no Jikan on Crunchyroll
I know. Hopefully Crunchyroll will help spread it out, but I am very disappointed at the login requirement to view the stream. Even if it's free to do so, it's much harder to get people to watch the stream if they have to create an account first. I'd also would like to get it on DVD, but if I have to import it from R2 like with Pale Cocoon and Mind Game, I'll do it.
I do agree that this looks to be one of the best shows of the year. Between this and Detroit Metal City, and First SquadI really don't have many other animes to look forward to this year. Not a real problem, as I have plenty of video gaming that I want to take a look at (Fallout 3, ArmA 2, and Cities XL, among others that I don't have at the top of my head).

ummm i wonder what is she upto .......
Re: Eve no Jikan on Crunchyroll
How is the quality of the downloaded file? Is it any better than the streaming version? One of my problems, other than the fact that it can't be streamed to my media center without problems, is the bad quality that comes with streaming the show. It just isn't as good as a standalone file.
Re: Eve no Jikan on Crunchyroll
The downloaded file is about comparable to the normal fansubs in terms of quality. At least better than the low-quality stream. It looks fine on my 27" screen, IMO.
