Byousoku 5 Cm Review by Daike

That lucky dog Daike from the Makoto Shinkai Fan Web was to be able to watch the premiere of Byousoku 5 Centimeter at the Cinema Rise theater in Tokyo, Japan. He is nice enough to write a review of the film for us Engish foreigners who won't be able to see this highly anticipated film from Makoto Shinkai for some time.

I say nice, but he makes me want to watch this film now! Ah well, I'll have to have patience. The movie will come to the U.S. one way or another soon enough. I hope...

I am impatiently waiting to

I am impatiently waiting to watch this also. It looks so good, the story to. I am a big softie to begin with, but this one tugs at my heart like his other two works, so I will probably be crying. XD

What kind of life did Shinkai have in his life to make these kind of films. Sad. :(

I know what you mean,

I know what you mean, thinking about what kind of life Shinkai had to make such films.  You're not the only one to wonder.

I don't think he had a particularly hard or depressing life, though.  To me, it seems that he simply had a wish to express himself artistically.  MSFW has a profile of Shinkai's life, and I can see where his films are a result of his youth in Nagano Prefecture (a place that is "famous as a summer resort because of beautiful landscape and cool temperature), his studies as a Japanese Literature major, his work as picture-book artist in his literature club, his experience learning CG and animation in a game company after graduating, and (from what I've read elsewhere) his hobbies in photography and landscape drawings.  I just think he had a rather normal life, but he works extremely hard to express himself in his work.  He is also a Miyazaki fan, a man who he shares a great talent for gorgeous scenery in his animations and characters with believable inner life that draw the viewer right into their world.

The only person that would truly know is Shinkai himself, and I don't think he even knows how he creates such great work.  He does inspire me to create something myself, but I don't have the talent to do so.
