Stirrings of a New Power (or Two...)

Just a couple things to update here.

First of all, I've went ahead, installed Drupal 5.1 on my server and will be posting stuff not related to anime, manga, books, or even movies over there. I've pointed http://www.nickistre.net to that site now. I may put up some of my old pictures and music and have discussions of politics and technology over there. I'll also migrate the non-anime related links over there. It is still in the building stage, so it may take some time to do so.

The other news is there's word of a new anime convention in this little city. Lafayette, LA, as of the 2000 census, only has a population of 110,257 (Though that's probably much bigger now from the migration of people from New Orleans and Baton Rouge by Hurricane Katrina), yet it already had its own local convention by the name of MechaCon. Yet there seems to be a group of people putting together a so-called Hub City Anime Convention Project (The name is temporary and they're searching for a proper convention name). Lafayette is often referred to as the "Hub City" as it served as a central base of operations for many businesses that serve the surround towns and communities in Acadiana, which would be the reason for the temporary name. Still, two separate conventions in Lafayette (and four in the state of Louisiana if you include KisuneFest and Tanuki Con) seems a bit on the excessive side, though I might check it out. Granted, the only anime convention I've ever gone to was MechaCon.  It was reasonably fun, though I'll probably not go to that particular one again. I might check out the others, though.

How many people are at any

How many people are at any of them? If it overflows, it probably is a time for a split. It is a factor of facilities, too. In our locale, San Jose tends to have Fanime which consumes all and grows without bounds. But just 50 miles north in San Francisco, they keep splinttering into miniature cons, e.g. Yaoi-con.

True.  The only con that I

True.  The only con that I know of any numbers was from the first Mechacon, and they had around 700 people a couple of years ago.  I don't know their numbers for last year.

They held the convention in the local Hilton, taking up at least one of the floors (I think they had some rooms on another floor for staff functions).  It didn't feel too crowded for the space they had in the first one they held.
