New Website Theme

As you may have noticed, I went and setup a new theme a few nights ago. Ah, what insomnia can do.

The look is built off of the Meta Theme for Drupal. I added in some code to show a random masthead image. You can check out the effect by refreshing the page or going to other pages on the site.

There's a few more tweaks that I want to do, mainly the footer text colors and filling in some of the blank white spaces with something. I have a friend who might provide some sketches for that. I also might have to fix some of the masthead images so that the white title text doesn't get too obscured by an image with white at the bottom.

Oh, about the masthead images, they're all actually from screenshots from the high-definition preview trailer of Makoto Shinkai's Byousoki 5 Centimeter!

Theme huh

That sure was slow to load... But it looks nice. Maybe a hair too wide. -- P

Yeah, I do realize that it

Yeah, I do realize that it might take some time to load this site for some. I haven't checked it out on a dial-up connection; that would probably be pretty awful. Ah well, it's just a personal weblog site anyways.

About the width, there's some tools (if you have javascript enabled) at the top of the page you should be able to use to change the width of the page to the most minimum site (Pick the button showing >< should do it).

I'll be damned, it works!

I'll be damned, it works! Well, kinda... The width only changes for about 4 pixels. But I think it's a swell idea. Actually, I realize just how hard it is to make variable-width themes in the CSS world. Making a banner picture which looks good is only one-quarter of the deal, perhaps. So the workaround is to let users to configure the thing. In programming it's considered a cop-out, because a program should be able to tune itself. But site scripting is barely a programming.

Indeed.  I am quite

Indeed.  I am quite impressed with that the theme-maker had setup here.  I tend to prefer the full width of my browser to be used if possible (My desktop monitors are 1280 pixels wide, and my widescreen laptop monitor stretches 1440 pixels across), but I know many people want a much narrower site look, and it's easier to design a site using fixed widths.  This is quite a good looking compromise, in my opinion.
